The DoubleTree Bethesda hotel (8120 Wisconsin Ave.) is hoping to attract people to its first-ever Oktoberfest celebration with a unique twist.

The hotel will host a “stein-hoisting” competition, inspired by the promotional campaign of the same name from mega-brewery Samuel Adams.

The challenge is to hold up a one-liter beer stein for as long as possible without dropping (and presumably, spilling) the beer.

Samuel Adams representatives will provide the steins. DoubleTree food and beverage director Craig Luparello said they’ll probably use water for the contest, which is set for Sept. 27 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The winner will get a all-expenses paid weekend package at the hotel and DoubleTree will submit the winning time to Samuel Adams, which hosts a national competition.

Luparello hopes the weather is nice enough to hold the competition on the hotel’s rooftop pool deck, site of DoubleTree’s popular Thursday and Sunday pool parties over the last three years.

He said the hotel has made a conscious effort to attract young, local residents with specifically-geared events.

“The pool event has had a fair amount of success and actually become kind of overwhelming,” Luparello said. The DoubleTree is considering adding another night for next summer’s series.

There will be food, a DJ and a bar. The event will happen inside at the hotel’s bar and restaurant if the weather doesn’t hold up.

How about a coffee mug hoising competition to waste time in the office? Sounds like a great Friday activity.

Are we allowed to drink the beer or do we just have to hold it? How about a warm beer chugging contest at the end? Winner gets to puke out back
