Haunted House in Hot Water Over Story Plot

(UPDATE: 9:35 p.m.) Commenter and petition starter Lisanne Petracca points out the Japenese fishing boat included in the backstory is also based on real events. More on the fishing boat here.

Chris Hoover wanted a new type of haunted house with an urban feel and a slick backstory when he opened ”The Warehouse: Project 4.1″ last month in North Bethesda.

According to a story in The Gazette, it appears the Kensington native got a lot more.

A group of people identifying themselves with the Marshall Islands is outraged about the fictional story of the haunted house, which alludes to the actual story of Project 4.1. In 1954, the U.S. studied the effects of a nuclear test on people in the Marshall Islands.

In the haunted house’s story, a fictional pharmaceutical company in the warehouse’s North Bethesda location gets access to a apparently fictional Japanese fishing boat that was infected by the nuclear blast. The 37,000-square-foot haunted house in the former space of Filene’s Basement features mock labs, contamination pods, a morgue and about 70 zombies.

Those zombies are supposed to depict employees of the fictional pharmaceutical company and not victims of the actual Marshall Islands nuclear testing, according to a statement on the haunted house’s website.

That hasn’t stopped Lisanne Petracca, of Long Island City, N.Y., from starting an online petition to get the haunted house to rebrand and change its story. The petition had more than 470 supporters this morning.

This premise is quite obviously grossly insensitive to an entire nation of people that continues to struggle with the effects of nuclear radiation. And yet this company has chosen to profit at the Marshall Islanders’ expense.

There is a wide network of Marshallese people (and their allies) that is positively outraged over this company’s idea of “entertainment.” Our Facebook group, “United Against Hallow Inc’s Haunted House,” now has over 3,000 members from all over the world. Group members’ posts on Hallow Inc’.s website sharing information about the nuclear testing and photos of the real-life victims of nuclear fallout were taken down within minutes. What are the Marshallese to do, sit back and watch as Hallow Inc. continues to make profits from their tragic past?

Our many, many emails to Hallow Inc. have gone unanswered (save for a form response that everyone received). And the company’s “Disclaimer,” which was produced within 24 hours of the start of our protest, merely parroted back educational material we had provided to them and contained no original thought. The Marshallese people and their allies are still awaiting  (1) an apology and (2) a massive overhaul of this supposedly “fictional” backstory. This calls for a rebranding of the “Project 4.1″ theme and all material related to the nuclear testing that occurred in the Marshall Islands.

The people of the Marshall Islands have suffered enough. Let’s do what we can to change the premise of this ill-conceived Halloween attraction.

This is the last weekend the haunted house (at 11840 Rockville Pike) was scheduled to be open. In September, Hoover said he hoped to bring it back next year, perhaps with a different story and in a more permanent location.

The Mid-Pike Plaza where the haunted house is now will be redeveloped in the mixed-use Pike & Rose project in the next two years.

    Hi there,

I am the creator of the change.org petition and would like to clarify something. This is taken directly from the Hallow Inc website:

“The attraction is based on Project 4.1, which was the designation for a medical study conducted by the U.S. Government of residents on the Marshall Islands exposed to radioactive fallout from the March 1, 1954 Castle Bravo Accident. This attraction will be a realistic bloody, bio-hazardous warehouse filled with attacking zombies, decaying bodies, vicious military men and much more.”

The attraction has both mad scientists and zombies. The mad scientists are the employees of this “fictional pharmaceutical company.” The zombies, on the other hand, are the subjects of nuclear contamination… which would undoubtedly be Marshallese and Japanese civilians. We’ve been told that one zombie is a mother holding her infant… surely pharmaceutical companies do not employ infants.

We are asking that Hallow Inc. drop all references to Project 4.1 and the Marshall Islands in their idea of this Halloween “attraction.” Surely this venture could be just as profitable with a purely fictional backstory.

Also, Lucky Dragon 5 is by no means a fictional boat. This was a *real* fishing boat that was trapped in the path of the nuclear testing. All sailors aboard this ship were exposed to radioactive ash, and ts radio operator, Kuboyama Aikichi, later died from radiation poisoning.

Unfortunately Hallow Inc’s disclaimer was only added after they received several emails criticising their backstory, and it mostly consists of word for word quotes from emails of complaint (i.e. book references and web links).

Their initial intention was not to raise awareness or educate the public about nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands, but to make money out of a haunted house. This would be a non-issue if they had a completely fictional premise, instead of naming the house after an extremely sensitive issue which is still very relevant to many Marshallese.

Hallow Inc also claim in their disclaimer that they plan to donate funds to Marshallese NGOs but representatives of both WUTMI and MICS say they have not been contacted by Hallow Inc regarding this. I find it very disingenuous that Hallow Inc are making these false claims on their website and also completely ignoring any criticisms of their project.

After over a week of attempted contacts, Hallow Inc. has still made no effort to respond to the concerns of thousands of people. I can’t speak for everyone, but I certainly don’t want to invest any money into a company so unable to muster up an ounce of compassion, ethics, or human decency.

Damn shame the Organizers did not learn from Simon Rushdie’s book incident or the recent video that led to massive protests, property damage or lives lost. The Marshallese are a lot smarter. They will not stop pressing the US Government until all the nuclear damage is fixed to their satisfaction.

This is the product of being “too soon.” A good idea manifested and hurt someone’s feelings. Who ever brought this petition about obviously never learned how to “change the channel” and start watching something else. Leave small business alone and go fight for something that actually matters!

    • Lisanne Petracca

      Ignorance at its finest.

Hi Jason, no issue with small business in general, but the issue is that this particular business is exploiting the tragedy of a small island nation to make profit. They have also been untruthful about this, i.e. claiming they will donate funds to Marshallese NGOs but the same NGOs have heard nothing from them.

Unfortunately, those who have been and are still affected by nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands can’t ‘change the channel’. This haunted house ties into much bigger issues around nuclear testing and is most certainly something that matters. I urge that you do some research on the real Project 4.1 and on the history of the Marshall Islands and the US before you dismiss our protest as irrelevant.

      Iakwe Jason,

No one is trying to take down Hallow Inc. All we want is to for them to change the name. That’s it. Good bless you and your family.

It is quite probable you are American and a loyal one at that. If this is indeed the case, how would you like it if Hallow Inc. gave the 9-11 tragedy the same treatment it gave Project 4.1? The question is entirely rhetorical.

  • Rambo Luther

Citizens of the same country who champion human rights should know better and not being an ignorant of the fact tha we the Marshallese as as human as any US citizens is.. simple logic!

  • Wally J.Bing

Hallow Inc./Project 4.1 stands at the very apex of crass commercialism.

And as long as we’re carrying on about ghouls, zombies and such, that’s MY nail in THEIR coffin.
