A busy playoff weekend left one Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School team with a state championship, one on the verge of a historic fifth straight and one hoping for more progress next year.

The Barons girls cross country team won its second straight 4A state title on Saturday, thanks in part to a first-place performance from sophomore Caroline Beakes. Beakes won with a time of 19 minutes and 17.4 seconds. The meet took place on the three-mile course at Hereford High School north of Baltimore. B-CC sophomore Nora McUmber finished third with a time of 19:28.1. and the team almost doubled the amount of points of second place Quince Orchard.

B-CC’s other defending state champions won over the weekend as well, setting up a chance at a fifth straight state title. The Barons’ girls soccer team beat Sherwood in penalty kicks in the state semifinals on Saturday to advance to the 4A state title game this week against Anne Arundel County school South River.

Sophomore Denali Minnick scored the clinching penalty kick after B-CC missed its first two. Goalkeeper Angela White saved a fifth-round Sherwood kick that would have ended the Barons’ season.

The B-CC football team, in its second straight playoff contest against state power Quince Orchard, didn’t fare as well.

The Barons lost 55-13 in Gaithersburg, ending a season that saw a second straight playoff berth and third consecutive winning record. It was the first time since the 1950′s that B-CC had three straight winning seasons. Before last year, the Barons last made the playoffs in 1995.
