The struggle for human connection is universal — and nowhere is the humor, frustration and terror of other people more on display than Craigslist, the ultimate Want Ad of the internet. …We’re using puppets, punches, ukeleles and a bedazzled loin cloth to create a night that ranges from the hysterical to the tragic to the just plain weird. Looking to hire a Dragon Slayer? Need to unload a sturdy wood dresser possessed by the demonic spirit of your ex? Woke up to a naked stranger in your bed and want to make that Missed Connection? You must be on Craiglsist — and so are we. Weith text taken directly from actual Craigslist ads, the internet comes to life in this original show created and performed by Flying V.

Bethesda Blues And Jazz Celebrates 75th Anniversary Of Bethesda Theatre

by Aaron Kraut | May 21, 2013 at 12:15 pm | 127 views | No Comments

Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club owner Rick Brown and a host of local dignitaries gathered on Friday for a ribbon cutting ceremony and celebration of the historic Bethesda Theatre’s 75th anniversary.

Brown and veteran D.C. club manager Ralph Camilli reopened the venue in late February, investing millions to make the building a regional music destination with no financial help from the county.

Councilmembers Roger Berliner and George Leventhal attended the Friday ceremony, as did County Executive Isiah Leggett and County Director of Economic Development Steve Silverman. The ribbon-cutting was followed by a performance from jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis.

Leggett: Solving Montgomery’s Nightlife Woes Won’t Be Easy

by Aaron Kraut | May 21, 2013 at 10:15 am | 410 views | 4 Comments

A Montgomery County Police officer keeps watch near a handful of Bethesda barsMontgomery County’s Nighttime Economy Task Force has six months to come up with solutions to problems that could require seismic changes in the county’s suburban culture to fix.

County Executive Isiah Leggett said there are many complex issues at play when he addressed the 20-plus member group during its first ever meeting on Monday in Silver Spring.

Leggett, who assembled the Task Force to deliver recommendations for improving the county’s nightlife, offered a sobering political reality he said must be considered when talking looser alcohol laws, later bar closing times or higher density development around Metro stations.

“Most people in this county, when you ask them the question about, ‘Should we improve the nighttime economy,’ intellectually, on-paper they’ll probably say, ‘Yes, that’s a good idea,’” Leggett said. “But their view of what that means is we can generate the economic benefits of that all in isolation, that it’s totally removed from their lives. People say, ‘I like the benefits of that, but I don’t want to deal with the practical effects of that.’”

In suburban Montgomery, long associated with wealthy single-family home neighborhoods, a prized school system and an older population, that’s a tough line to cross. But county leaders, seeing young tax-paying professionals flock to the District and Arlington, want in on the action.

“People say, ‘Oh my gosh, well now we’re going to have 23-year-olds driving down the streets of Bethesda at 70 miles an hour and screaming out their windows and kicking over trash cans,’” Task Force Chair and Bethesda land use attorney Heather Dlholopolsky told the group. “That’s not what it means. The key thing to remember is that nighttime economy is so many things and don’t be too exclusive in terms of the things that you’re looking for.”

That means activities for empty-nesters, middle-aged residents and the young urban professionals Leggett said he’s tired of seeing get away.

“We pay a huge investment in our school system, one of the best in the entire country. Many of them go off to college and once they’ve completed college and they are now thinking about settling down, they’re more likely to go to Adams Morgan, other locations in the District, Arlington or, god forbid, Fairfax,” Leggett said. “They’ve taken that investment that we made, that education that we started and they are utilizing that in some other location. We’re not going to capture 100 percent of the people, but there’s a reason as to why they’re not thinking of us as a first choice.”

On Friday, the theater will re-open with Academy Award nominee “Kon-Tiki,” and “Max Manus: Man of War,” before “The Great Gatsby” remake starts on May 10.

Bethesda Blues and Jazz To Celebrate 75th Anniversary of Theater

by Aaron Kraut | May 1, 2013 at 10:59 am | 123 views | No Comments

The Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club opened in March, but it has delayed an official re-opening celebration until it could celebrate another milestone.

On May 17, the Club will couple a ribbon-cutting ceremony with a celebration of the historic Bethesda Theatre’s 75th anniversary. Jazz saxophonist Branford Marsalis will take the stage for a special performance.

The theater (7719 Wisconsin Ave.) was built in 1938 in the streamline moderne style and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s Wisconsin Avenue marquee went unchanged until the Club took over operations and renovated the 500-seat theater for $8 million.

The theater went to auction in 2010 with a $4 million debt attached. A $12 million contribution from developer Bozzuto Group helped re-open it in 2007 when Bozzuto built The Whitney apartment complex above it.

Club owner Rick Brown’s mother graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School on the theater’s stage in 1947. He remembered going to movies there when it was still a movie theater in the 1950′s.

On May 17 at 6 p.m., local dignitaries and others will make remarks and cut a ribbon. A cocktail reception will follow from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. The main event, with Marsalis, starts with dinner at 7:15 p.m. and the show at 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $175 and include dinner, drinks, tax, handling and gratuity.

Bethesda Row Cinema Boss Details Changes

by Aaron Kraut | April 24, 2013 at 12:45 pm | 359 views | 1 Comment

Bethesda Row Cineman rendering, via Landmark Theatres

The luxury movie theater business is heating up and the CEO of the company that operates the Bethesda Row Cinema says it’s sparing no expense to keep pace.

Yesterday, almost a month after Landmark Theatres closed the Cinema (7235 Woodmont Ave.) closed for a remodeling and renovation, CEO and President Ted Mundorff detailed some of the changes in a press release.

A full-service bar and lounge area, leather seats that patrons will reserve before shows, RealD 3D projection, new screens and sound systems are some of the changes that patrons will see when Bethesda Row Cinema reopens on Friday, May 3.

The move comes as the upscale movie theater competition around Bethesda Row gets tougher. The arrival of luxury movie house iPic in White Flint is expected next summer or fall. It too will offer the pre-reserved seat option and full bar and food menus.

Another luxury theater was planned for new development at Rockledge Drive, but that project hit a snag last year.

The new Bethesda Row Cinema will also feature a satellite feed for live domestic and international performances, the first of which will come on June 29 with the London’s National Theatre’s live production of “The Audience,” starring Helen Mirren.

“From the minute you approach the theatre and see our stunning new marquee, our hope is that our guests notice the attention to detail in every facet of the theatre and share our excitement as we begin a new chapter at the Bethesda Row,” Mundorff said in the statement. “We have spared no expense to give our patrons the best movie-going experience in town.”

Bethesda Row Cinema opened in 2002. The 140,000-square-foot theater has served as an anchor tenant for Bethesda Row since that time.

Strathmore, Developer To Partner In White Flint Music Venue

Strathmore music venue and iPic Theater building rendering, via Federal Realty and Strathmore

Strathmore and Rockville-based developer Federal Realty have announced plans for a 250-seat music venue overlooking the luxury movie theater under construction at the Pike & Rose development in White Flint.

Strathmore, which says its decade-old Music Center at Strathmore (5301 Tuckerman Lane) is approaching capacity, will book the unnamed venue with jazz, rock, folk and other performances on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Strathmore and Federal Realty hope to book weddings, celebrations and corporate events for the space when it’s not being used for music.

They hope to deliver the venue in 2015. The first phase of the 24-acre, $250-million mixed-use development on the site of the Mid-Pike Plaza shopping center is set to be completed in 2014. That phase includes the luxury iPic Theatre, a commercial anchor for Pike & Rose.

It also will include an 18-story, 300-unit apartment building near the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Executive Boulevard.

The glass-enclosed music venue will include a 2,833-square-foot indoor space and a 1,100-square foot pre-function space with an outdoor balcony and green room.

“With the Concert Hall and Arts Education Center approaching capacity and the Strathmore name well established in the region, it’s time to reach out to ages and tastes beyond our current programming and facilities,” Strathmore founder and CEO Eliot Pfanstiehl said in a press release. “In this groundbreaking partnership with Federal Realty, we are both a familiar anchor to their new Pike & Rose community and a champion of the lifestyle they offer to their future residents and businesses.”

Strathmore says the venue will host intimate jazz shows, contemporary performances and “trend-setting touring acts.”

“Bringing an arts institution of Strathmore’s stature into one of the crown jewels of Federal Realty’s development portfolio underscores the importance that the arts play within our community and the region as a whole,” Federal Realty Vice President of Development Evan Goldman said. “Federal Realty is committed to creating unique, engaging environments within the neighborhoods that we build. Simply put, we believe that great environments lead to a better way of life. Just as Bethesda Row has become the epicenter of its community, Pike & Rose will be an urban, inspirational location for North Bethesda and the White Flint Community to enjoy on many levels for years to come.”

Bethesda Row Cinema To Close For Renovations Tomorrow

Bethesda Row Cinema

Bethesda Row Cinema (7235 Woodmont Ave.) will close tomorrow for about a month of renovations that will include a new bar area.

Some work has already begun at the theater, which serves as one of the key anchors of the Bethesda Row shopping and restaurant district. Landmark Theatres, which operates Bethesda Row Cinema, says the theater will be closed from tomorrow until Friday, May 3.

We’re waiting for comment from a Landmark representative, but last year the company’s senior vice president of real estate and development told The Gazette renovations would include a bar area, larger, more comfortable seats in the eight theaters and a new lobby with sitting areas, tables, sofas and “the feel of a contemporary lounge.”

The theater will also unveil a new menu and craft beer choices. Movie-goers will be able to reserve seats online or at the box office.
