Veteran-Geared Job Fair Slated For Walter Reed

A job fair for transitioning military veterans and their spouses is coming to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Aug. 25, an initiative launched last year by financial services giant JPMorgan Chase with the goal of hiring 100,000 veterans by 2020.

The “100,000 Jobs Mission” is a group of 58 companies that will partner with Naval District Washington Family Support Programs to put on the event. Military members, veterans and their spouses are encouraged to pre-register and submit their resumes online.

Male veterans age 18 to 24 who served since September 2001 had an unemployment rate of 29 percent in 2011, according to a March release from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Male non-veterans in the same age group had an unemployment rate of 17 percent.

Military spouses are dealing with a 26 percent unemployment rate, much higher than the national rate.

JPMorgan Chase announced the campaign in March 2011, amid a scandal in which the bank admittedly overcharged members of the military for their mortgages.

The 100,000 Jobs Mission claims 18,249 veterans have been hired as part of the program as of July.
